After Daughter yesterday, today is the turn of another act we expect to see on the BBC Sound of 2013 List, Haim. The three sisters, Este, Danielle and Alana Haim, from LA have been attracting fans and acclaim more readily than Jedwood attract derision, signed to Polydor UK and had us dancing round the lounge like Carlton Banks. Good times.
If you were to try and describe their sound to someone yet to hear them, a kind of rock and R’n’B hybrid with some old-style girl-pop mixed in, you would be looked at with a sceptics eye and told to get lost. Yet, despite its undoubted genre-melting bonkersness, it really works. Not only does it work, it is so much fun. It’s real sing-along, bop/groove/sway-a-long music that brings a smile to your face.
The fun conveyed seems genuine too, as anyone who follows the girls on Twitter or Facebook can attest to. The videos are full of energy and enjoyment and usually contain a little dance routine that looks like it was made up on the tour bus or whilst goofing around at home. These are three young ladies having a great time and enjoying making music. Vocal duties are shared amongst the three and their sibling similarity (not identical mind you) creates fantastic harmonies and lyrical layering with “Go Slow” (which you can stream below) a perfect example of their dovetailing voices.
It was “Forever” that saw the band really start to blow up with radio play and high profile support coming from all angles. For many, “Forever” has been cited as a track of the year contender, though we think it was eclipsed by “Don’t Save Me” (video below), which just has the most grooveable sound going on. Either way, the girls are more than proving their ability to write great pop and as 2012 draws to a close, it really feels like the sky is the limit in 2013.
