Confession time; aside from recognising the vocals but not knowing from where, we didn’t know diddly about Junip until we heard their brand new track, “Line Of Fire”. One quick Google and a ‘oh that’s who it is’ moment later, and everything made sense.
For those of you who are scratching their heads in much the same way we did, the vocals belong to José González. Still scratching your head? Much like Troy Maclure, you may know him from such mellifluous sounds as this amazing Kylie cover or, which is more likely, this Sony Bravia advert where he covered The Knife.
Anyway, Junip is his “kraut-folk” band formed in the late 90’s with Elias Araya and Tobias Winterkorn. Together they released a 7″ in 2000, an EP in 2006 and their debut full length in 2010. Now they are back with a new album, Junip, which is out on 23 April, and to get everyone ready and excited, they have made the first track, “In The Line of Fire” free to download.
The track is bright, warm and really springs to life as the sound builds; it’s hard to believe there are only three of them. It sounds rich and mildly rousing, like waking up after a really good nights sleep and feeling ready to tackle the day with a spring in your step and a smile on your face. If Sony wanted to soundtrack a load of multi-coloured balls bouncing down a hill once more, they’d be using this.
Oh yes, we do like this 🙂
