Watch: Joel Compass – “Astronaut”

Joel Compass

There is an unwritten rule within Alphabet Bands Towers, don’t write about Joel Compass until you’ve seen the video. It’s a rule that came into force after we went a bit weak at the knees when listening to the young London producer’s debut track, “Back To Me”. Like many other blogs, we took to our laptop to eulogise about the track though we decided to focus on just how damn sexy he sounds and the smooth Prince-like groove he was laying down. Then the video came out and it was all about trying to bring a father back to his son. Yeah, much like the title of his second track, we “Fucked Up”.

So when he dropped his latest track, “Astronaut”, on Soundcloud recently the (now written) unwritten rule came into effect and we waited for the video to come along and divulge its hidden meaning. Except the video is a fairly straight laced performance clip, albeit from in front of both a very shiny spaceship console and an even shiner star lined background. So, with no stark revelation available we will instead focus on the smooth as silk sound and his falsetto, which is so sexy it could make a Nun renounce God and fling off her chastity belt; if he wanted it to.

As well as a Faith shattering voice, Compass is blessed with an innate gift for producing controlled brilliance. By that we mean his tracks feel like they have been precision engineered, painstakingly crafted to sound just so, and it really works. His blend of highly polished, down-tempo R’n’B, pop and old(ish) school UK garage hits a number of spots, most of which are marked ‘smoochy’ and ‘erogenous’.

Fans on YouTube have used words like ‘fresh’, ‘epic’, ‘this is the ish’, ‘swagg’, ‘check out my music’ and ‘this comment has been flagged as spam’ to describe “Astronaut” and we don’t even know what half of those words mean. So it must be good!

Smooth, soulful, smooch and expertly crafted; it’s the kind of track that Craig David would have given his seventh day for way back when. It’s mature beyond his years, charming and yes, pretty freaking sexy. Of course it is, nothing beats an Astronaut right?

”Astronaut” will be released as a single on 19 August and Joel’s debut EP, also called ‘Astronaut’ and which contains previous tracks “Back To Me”, “Fucked Up” and another as yet unheard track, is due out on 2 September. Both are on Black Butter Records and you can pre-order the EP now.
