Listen: MMX – “Only”

MMX

If, like us, you occasionally like a bit of a slow-burn in your pop music, a bit of atmosphere and emotion then, like us, you will probably enjoy the latest offering from Oxfordshire four-piece, MMX. Having already given us one EP this year, the quietly renowned Child, they are about to give us another, Heir, from which lead single “Only” is taken.

At just shy of six minutes in length, “Only” is a bit longer than your average pop song but it is fair to say it is a bit better than your average pop song as well.

Contained within it is a significant and sympathetic weight of feeling that is peppered with sharp percussion, brooding and atmospheric vocals and simmering guitar sounds. Each moment in the song cascades into the next, resonating with its emotional urgency and delicacy. It’s like a thunderstorm rising in the distance. Despite the space between us and it, you can feel its power building up and crashing down. Then the storm wanes slightly, you think it has passed only for it to rise once again, its crescendos and diminuendos carrying you along and buffeting you on the internal turmoil of your mood.

”Only” will be released as a single on 3 September and can be pre-ordered here.
