Listen: Paperwhite: “got me goin”

22 Jan

Is 2014 already the year of chilled out electronica? Last year’s synthpop felt very vibrant and colourful whereas already this year we have been treated to a lot of high quality tunes that have been so laidback, they’ve been practically horizontal. Just this morning we featured the wonderful Yumi Zouma and now we have even more for you to fall in love with from Brooklyn brother-sister duo, Paperwhite.

The first offering from Katie and Ben Marshall is a glossy dream of cloud like soundscapes, that is, says Katie, about finding direction in moments of personal immobility and the power of a new love in your life. Though “got me goin” is more a gentle nudge than a kick up the arse, the imbuing of purpose and confidence within, rather than the artificial jollying up from without perhaps.

Speaking of within, there is within the song a floating trance like element, reminiscent of Way Out West’s “The Gift” in actual fact, drifting in like an autumn leaf on a cool breeze. It dances gracefully, buffeted and caressed by the graceful sophistication of beats, melody and harmonic bliss. It’s like that scene from American Beauty where they just sit and watch the plastic bag swirl in the wind, but without any of the pretention or trying-too-hard-to-mean-something-significant-but-not-really-pulling-it-off vibes.

Feel the breeze lift you gently into the air and let go as you are carried to who knows where; “got me goin” is gorgeous and worth getting lost with for an afternoon or two.
