Strange Talk – “Young Hearts”

Strange Talk

We’re not ashamed to admit it, we’ve reached that age now where a little bit of nostalgia is often welcome and endearing. That little warm glow of recognition and a whiff of a memory at a long forgotten movie reference, TV show or childhood game that you can only smile at. Playing in your den on the farm over the road, chasing each other around with stick guns as you clamber over trees and through ditches or riding up and down the giant, naturally made ramp in the middle of the woods on your BMX, for example (we’re getting a little misty eyed here…).

We’re not the only ones either, in recent months both Eye Emma Jedi and Explorers have looked back at their childhood years with affection and now, indirectly, Melbourne’s Strange Talk have got in on the act as well.

We say indirectly because unlike Eye Emma Jedi and Explorers, “Young Hearts” doesn’t actually deal with a time gone by, more a feeling and sense of being young and without a care in the world. In fact, without a care in the world perfectly describes the electro-indie-pop sound that is bursting forth from “Young Hearts”. It’s childhood innocence and exuberance in song form. The playful sound of the “nah nah lah lah’s” pulls on your ears like teasing fingers pulling on pigtails and drums skip and jump, leapfrogging over keys as the song fastens it’s coat by the top button, arms out of sleeves so it billows out behind you cape like as it flies off, taking you with it. It’s just so damn positive and smile inducing, it’s even got a grand arms in the air, sing a long at the breakdown bit for crying out loud. It’s a full blast of summer sunshine in the cold of winter; wake up world and feel the optimism. It’s great to be alive (even if you’re not quite as young as you used to be…)

Strange Talk’s debut album, ‘Cast Away’, is due for release on 29 April and can be pre-ordered here, along with the “Young Hearts” single, which is out now.
