Skyes – “A Girl Named Jake”

Skyes

Since posting their debut track online last week, Brooklyn based Skyes have already gathered plaudits-a-plenty and stirred up a fair bit of excitement with their distinctly a la mode synth sound and soft female vocals. Where they differ though is in the back story, we’re not sure too many bands have started when the personal relationship between two members ended but hey, whatever works right?

For vocalist DA Knightly and guitarist Dan, it is indeed working and with the duo expanded to a four-piece, they are set for much more love and excited wailing and waving of arms in the coming months with a self-titled EP in the works. Should megastardom beckon, they could even end up cited in hundreds of musical couple’s divorce papers as ‘inspiration’. But we digress…

Debut offering “A Girl Named Jake” expertly walks that fine line that straddles the world of chic new sounds and chart friendly mainstreamica. With its pulsating beat and slightly sinister synth sounds, it’s got a dangerous edge to it, like taking a short cut through the park at night. Shadows in the drums conceal powerful growling guitars, but that just a sleight of hand, for as the track builds it is the alluring vocals that are waiting to strike. Passionate and viper like they take you captive, your heart pounding and adrenaline whooshing through your body as DA sings you to your oh so infectious doom.
