The very first track we posted this year came from Brighton’s Fickle Friends. Seemingly appearing from nowhere (they did have a track out earlier, but as is often the way, it’s no longer online) they unleashed the ridiculously hot and summery ”Swim” on the world and practically every blog dived headfirst into the deep end. At last check, over 60 Hype Machine blogs had pulled on the speedos and given some love to the five-piece (which is ironic when you consider the ‘no heavy petting’ rules at public swimming pools).
Now, having heated up the winter, they are back to spark spring into life with more light and airy synth-pop deliciousness. Not quite as balls to the wall delirious as “Swim”, “Play” still offers plenty to smile and sing along to.
It is, as you’d expect, playful and bright. Natti’s soft vocals are the breeze through the car window as a group of friends head out for a gloriously sunny road-trip to a summer festival. The engine purring along with the quite Two Door Cinema-esque skip of guitars as the campsite heads into view. The group laugh and fool around as they explore the fields and stalls, the rhythm propelling them along as they dance and sing all the way to the main stage, just in time for, oh yes, Fickle Friends.
They may deal with confusion, fading love and panic in their songs, but Fickle Friends are already cornering the market in big uplifting summer sounds. No question, they will be a big hit on the festival circuit this year, and if you want to see them, check out their announced dates below the song.
“Play” is out now and available to buy from iTunes.
