2015 Preview: Listen Out For #11 – Waterbed

3 Dec

A few weeks ago we had one of our semi-regular ‘who is this and how did they get into our soundcloud feed?’ moments as “around” by Waterbed started playing. For one thing, we were sure we’d remember the name, but no, we had no clue. We did like the song though, a lot, so a googling we did go.
It soon transpired that we had been following them for sometime but that when we started they were actually called MVSCLES. Back then they seemed ready to break out and evidently we weren’t the only ones to think so as they were soon signed to a label. Sadly the arrangement was not to be the success that they had hoped as the label started to micro-manage and the band became uncomfortable with how it was progressing. They can’t give too many details or name names but being in MVSCLES was not the happy place it had once been.

Fast forward to now and the band and the label have since come to a mutually agreeable parting of the ways and, after a bit of an identity crisis the re-christened Waterbed are back releasing music, and it’s as good as ever.

New song “around” has a beat that head nods in the background as the synths and electronics dance skittishly like a spider on acid. Flourishes whistle and call like digital whale song as Cat’s vocals entice and beckon to your ears. It’s Blue Hawaii, Us Baby Bear Bones and MYPET; it’s dance music, has hip-hop beats and is frenetic electronica. It’s pop and it’s great.

You get the sense that, having been burnt already, Cat and Chad are going to take what they have learned about the industry and come back stronger and better than ever. Certainly the quality of the music supports our assertion and we look forward to (hopefully) hearing many more tunes and watching their profile grow in the next year and beyond.
