Few labels had quite the banner year that Duly Noted Records did in 2014, introducing us to brilliant new acts with quality release following quality release. They even found time to host a rather splendid label gig at the end of the year. Not ones for resting on laurels, the DN crew have already kicked 2015 off in great style with brand new music from The Night VI (which we featured here) and now, with the year only three weeks old they are giving us more new music and this time, from a new addition to their already cracking line-up.
As is pretty much the default with new artists these days, not a lot of information is available about Anteros. Given the image above, we presume the band is named after Eros’ brother, one of the ever-youthful winged gods of love. We do know though that this self-titled debut is the first of a bunch of tracks to be released this year that will make up an EP. Also there are three of them in the band and, judging by the vocals, at least one of them is female. There’s a twitter account (linked below) but it doesn’t appear to be in use (yet).
Our startling lack of knowledge aside, there is a lot to enjoy with this debut and a lot to get us excited for the future. “Anteros” starts of slowly, prompting remembrances of the dearly departed Vuvuvultures’ track, “Whatever You Will” (we fully expect to be the only people to think that) before increasing velocity through the rhythm. There is a really nice retro-indie pop feel to it, flickers of pre-consumed by Bono’s ego U2 (80’s style) in the guitar and a grand, multi-layered and upbeat chorus that borders on anthemic. It’s excitingly new yet reassuringly familiar, full of top-down exuberance, frolics and love. We love it which makes it exactly the sort of thing that befits their mythological namesake.
