If it feels a bit like we are posting a lot of laidback, funky grooves at the moment, that’s because it seems to be in abundance right now and a lot of it is very, very good indeed. Take Monogem for example, their latest track “The Glow” is a blissed out dream of kaleidoscopic colours and disco beats.
Taken from a forthcoming EP, the LA duo of Jen Hirsh and Scott Smith have given us a smooth as you like tune that dances away happily with infectious hooks, sweet disco vocals and bright 80’s nightclub keys and flourishes. It’s synthpop with funk, with dance, with disco and with electronic fun. It’s playful, fun and fantastic without ever being overbearing and in your face, more charismatic and cool dance partner than over the top and annoyingly handsy dancefloor leach.
It’s the type of polished, soulful and compulsive groove-laden electropop track that all the other polished, soulful and compulsive groove-laden electropop tracks want to be like.
Modern retro pop. It’s all groovy
