In Session… She Makes War – “Exit Strategy”

31 May

Last week we posted the first part of our beautiful session with She Makes War, recorded when she was in town for a show. Now we are pleased to share part two with you which not only features another fabulous acoustic rendition of a track from her latest album, Little Battles but a lesson for us here at Alphabet Bands. That being, if someone walks in halfway through a session, don’t just check for road noise after his arrival, check to see if he makes a noise himself and if he actually enters the blummin shot! We like to think it adds to the charm of the session.

This is She Makes War performing the excellent “Exit Strategy” and featuring a special guest appearance from some dude’s arm. Enjoy.

Watch: She Makes War – “Exit Strategy”

If we are being honest, ‘Gloom Pop’ is not a genre we are overly familiar with. If it all sounds like “Exit Strategy” from London’s very own She Makes War though, we will certainly be making an effort to rectify that unfamiliarity.

The track, taken from She Makes War’s second album Little Battles (which is out next week), really gets under your skin. Echoes of early nineties, pre-britpop guitar bands (we’re thinking Breeders and the like) escape the gloom and draw you back in. It’s been on repeat for a little while now and we love it.

The accompanying video, which you can see below, is rather captivating as well. Directed by She Makes War herself, aka Laura Kidd, it draws on Ms Pac-Man and Groundhog Day for inspiration (because we all know that thinking of one automatically leads you to think of the other) and features the fabulously named character ‘malevolent girl’.

She Makes War’s second album, Little Battles is out next week (9 April) on My Big Sister Recordings and can be pre-ordered here.
