In Session: Box of Light: “The Island”

Box of Light Main

Earlier this week Norwich’s own Box Of Light released their debut single, “Falling”, to the world and to commemorate the occasion we are pleased to bring you an exclusive session recording they did for us, of “The Island”.

Yes, we know that “The Island” isn’t their debut single but we’ve already shared a fantastic and intimate performance of “Falling” with you and besides, we’ve heard whispers that “The Island” will be their second single, so consider yourselves ahead of the curve on this one.

Filmed at Norwich’s newest independent record shop, Blossom Records, by the always wonderful Sessions Productions, “The Island” is filled with a similar innocent and nostalgic feeling to “Falling” and is blessed with warm light pop sounds and infectious foot-tapping rhythms. Enjoy.

”Falling” is out now and available to buy on iTunes.

Watch: Box of Light – “Falling”

Box of Light Main

During the Norwich Sound and Vision festival, we attended a panel on how not to make a music video, in which they said the most important thing to do is to create visuals that complement the sound. Such a simple premise and one that is often forgotten when acts/directors instead focus on the dazzling and spectacular rather than the elegant and understated. Here in the Fine City, bands are clearly learning the lessons of the festival panel and today we are sharing two videos from Norwich bands that sit with the music perfectly.

The first comes from Box of Light, the five-piece who played their first ever gig for us in July and who look set to do big things in 2014. Their debut single, “Falling”, which was recorded in an old abattoir of all places (though that could be seen as a step up – or down – from their usual rehearsal space, a disused nuclear bunker) is a nostalgic love song that conjures up images of a simpler time. A time of feel good 80’s romance movies, looking longingly across the room, hoping to be noticed and looking away shyly when you are, of letterman jackets, high-school rings and going steady. It’s deceptively effortless as a glitter filled vocal calls out a simple but important request, “fall for me too”.

With a song that feels like it looks at the world through a soft focus lens, it’s only right that the video should match and lo and behold, the guys and gals at Rock-Star have done just that. Here four of the five band members spend a day of ice-cream, arcades and campfires at a quiet seaside town that itself looks as though it just stopped around 1985 and said; ‘that’ll do – no need to go any further, this year is fine for me’. Both song and video are full of innocence and warmth and sit perfectly as one.

”Falling” is out now and available to buy on iTunes and you can watch an acoustic performance of the song, filmed in session for us, here.

In Session: Box Of Light – “Falling”

Box of Light

We’re not sure how, but there appears to be an unspoken connection between us and Norwich’s Box Of Light that involves ‘firsts’.

For example…

We put on their first ever live gig at our first ever Alphabet Bands Presents… night earlier this year.

They played the first ever WombleStock as part of the Norwich Lanes Festival.

And today we have the first of our two session tracks from the band (well three of them at least) where they became the first band to play on the newly constructed stage at Norwich’s newest independent record store, Blossom Records.

See what we mean?

Since performing for us at Open in July the band has gone on to play gigs at the likes of the Latitude and Green Man festivals as well as numerous other shows in London and beyond. We don’t doubt that you will be hearing a lot more from this lot in the not too distant future. Mark them down in your books guys so you can say, yes, ‘I knew about them first’.

This is “Falling”, as filmed by the always amazing Sessions Productions.

Listen: Haim – “Falling”

14 Feb

Haim - Falling

Can anyone stop Haim? More to the point, why would anyone want to? The three sisters from LA have been tearing it up in the last few months, topping both the Blog Sound Of 2013 and BBC Sound Of 2013 polls, as well as featuring on our own Tracks of 2012, EPs of 2012 and Artists to Listen Out For lists.

They show no sign of slowing down either and their latest track, “Falling”, is another infectious and funky blend of R’n’B, Pop and Rock. We could jabber on about the 80’s influences or we could bore you to tears with more mentions of just how brilliantly they bounce their vocals off one another. We could even talk about the little piano notes that tumble sporadically in the background, and how it is these minor but oh-so important details that help set the girls apart from other acts.

But we won’t, because this is Haim and you already know all of this. Instead we will concentrate on just one element of the song in particular, the totally killer bassline that pulsates along at the start of the track like an electrocardiogram, before exploding into some Dev Hynes-esque funk.

Take a listen below and we dare you not to get your groove on, can’t be done can it?

”Falling” is available now on iTunes and will be released on ltd edition pink 10” vinyl on 1 April.
