Watch: Jack Robert Hardman – “Lights of London”

29 Mar

Evidently, Jack Robert Hardman is not a young man who likes to sit still or be constrained by a singular sound. After the languid and melodious folk charms of his debut single, “Famous”, you would be forgiven for expecting more of the same. Here we are though with his follow up, “Lights of London” which is a much more upbeat number.

“Lights…” is the kind of light and frothy pop affair that eats mainstream radio play for breakfast. A jaunty little effort, its effervescent glockenspiel melody bounces along while Jack sings his love letter to the bright lights, big city essence of our nation’s capitol.

The accompanying video, which was edited by Sylvia Witter, is a hotchpotch of vintage and found footage. Clips of old London mixed with a variety of animations and scenes of Jack in various locations around the city, which were filmed using an old fashioned video camera.

We caught up with Jack to ask about the thought process behind the video and he explained, “The aim was to create a fast paced video using vintage footage. The contrast between dark backdrops and very bright focus points was how I always imagined the song, so that’s why I think things like fireworks work so well.”

Take a look and let us know what you think.

“Lights of London” is available on 7 May via Pleasant Pursuits / Essential Music and is the opening track of his eponymous debut album, which is out on 14 May. The album can be pre-ordered on iTunes now.

Free Download: Exlovers – “Starlight Starlight”

We love free things, especially when they are good. So it stands to reason that we should like this new track from London based five-piece, Exlovers as it is both of these things.

The song, “Starlight Starlight”, is a cracking example of summery sounding retro indie pop, which will have you hankering for warmer months so it can play in the background as you muck around in the back garden with family and friends. Well, that’s the feeling we get when listen to it and the video certainly goes along with that hanging-out-with-the-family vibe.

Produced by Ursine Vulpine, the slightly kitsch promo, which you can see below, is made up from a collection of found footage. Like visual vinyl, a series of old home movies, from what looks like the 60′s and 70′s, are cleverly juxtaposed with the reflective lyrics and the old fashioned feel of the song.

Exlovers debut album Moth will be released via Young & Lost Club in the Spring and, if you like the sound of “Starlight Starlight”, head over to the band’s website to claim your free download.
