In Session: Box Of Light – “Falling”

19 Sep

Box of Light

We’re not sure how, but there appears to be an unspoken connection between us and Norwich’s Box Of Light that involves ‘firsts’.

For example…

We put on their first ever live gig at our first ever Alphabet Bands Presents… night earlier this year.

They played the first ever WombleStock as part of the Norwich Lanes Festival.

And today we have the first of our two session tracks from the band (well three of them at least) where they became the first band to play on the newly constructed stage at Norwich’s newest independent record store, Blossom Records.

See what we mean?

Since performing for us at Open in July the band has gone on to play gigs at the likes of the Latitude and Green Man festivals as well as numerous other shows in London and beyond. We don’t doubt that you will be hearing a lot more from this lot in the not too distant future. Mark them down in your books guys so you can say, yes, ‘I knew about them first’.

This is “Falling”, as filmed by the always amazing Sessions Productions.

In Session: Raevennan Husbandes – “Stay”

10 Apr

Last week we shared a gorgeous session with you from the extremely talented Ravennan Husbandes. We loved her performance so much that while we were there, we asked her very nicely if she would do another song for us. Luckily she is as lovely as she is talented and said yes.

The very wonderful Sessions Productions have done the leg work for us once again, so now we can present Raevennan in session once again, this time performing “Stay”.

In Session: Raevennan Husbandes – “Sirens”

3 Apr

Here in Norwich we are blessed to be home to some outstanding singer-songwriters and now, in Raevennan Husbandes, we have another who is winning hearts and minds all around the city and way beyond. Ok, so she is actually from Lowestoft which isn’t really Norwich and no, technically it isn’t even Norfolk but we are claiming her for the city, she’s just too good not to.

Like another of the City’s exceptional talents, the divine Milly Hirst, Raevennan is blessed with a voice that silences rooms and captivates audiences. It is sweet and pure and drifts beautifully over the intricate and dexterous guitaring she plays underneath. Last year she won the Future Radio Next Big Thing Competition (previous winners include Ed Sheeran, just saying) and even more remarkably, she was diagnosed with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) syndrome a couple of years ago after she suddenly lost the ability to move, see and hear.

Thankfully she is no longer afflicted and her talent is shining through once more and we were keen to see it first hand. So we grabbed the wonderful Sessions Productions and headed to OPEN to meet up with Raevennan and film an exclusive session. We’ll share more next week but for now, enjoy the delights of her new track, “Sirens”.

In Session: Oliver Rudge – “I Will Be Your Sun”

1 Apr

Ollie Rudge

You know how it goes; every day someone is telling someone else to listen out for yet another someone as they are going to be the next one. The big one, the one that takes what that other one has done and makes it look like nothing. We’ve done it, other bloggers have done it, everyone knows someone who is going to be that someone. Sometimes though, just sometimes, you come across an artist who you don’t think is going to be someone, you know it. You can feel it. You only have to hear them sing, see them perform and it’s there. It.

Oliver Rudge, or Ollie if you like, has it and undoubtedly, it won’t be long before everyone knows. Just 18, Ollie has a youthful charm and exuberance, a ‘this shit is fun’ vibe that is pretty darn infectious. Talk to him and this young brummie could almost be any other gregarious kid talking about going out and having a laugh; listen to him sing and he could win the heart of the most glacial of ice maidens. Don’t believe us? We know cynical old bastards who wouldn’t be impressed by a unicorn juggling dinosaur eggs while riding a unicycle and burping the alphabet backwards; when it comes to Ollie though, they are getting more excited than a 6 year old girl being given a puppy for their birthday.

His debut EP, I Will Be Your Sun, will be out later this month and we were lucky enough to catch up with Ollie recently to film an acoustic session of the title track. It’ a song he wrote in the time it took to walk to the end of his road and back in the snow and it is probably one of the most gorgeous tracks we’ve heard this year. We did mention that Ollie is prodigiously talented right? Watch him play, to no one but us and the wonderful Sessions Productions who shot the video, and he could quite easily be performing to a packed audience. Charisma doesn’t cut it, he has more. Tender, sweet, warm with just enough of an edge to it and oh so freaking good, if we could play guitar that way we’d never bloody stop.

Everyone knows someone who is going to be someone. Oliver Rudge is going to be someone that everyone knows.

The ‘I Will Be Your Sun’ EP will be released 15 April and is available for pre-order now. We tell you this as once you’ve played the video, you’re probably going to want to come back and click this link.

In Session: Milly Hirst – “Book Or A Film”

7 Mar

Milly Hirst

Milly Hirst is a singer songwriter of prodigious talent and we are extremely excited to share something very special with you today. Blessed with a voice that could quieten the rowdiest of rooms and probably even soothe the most savage of beasts, Milly sings with delicate beauty and heartfelt emotion. Put simply, she is a bewitching artist and we love to sit back, close our eyes and just listen to her sing.

As you can imagine then, we were more than a little chuffed when she agreed to film a session for us. Watch the video below (which has once again been put together for us by the lovely folks at Sessions Productions), take a listen, fall in love, We have. Some of you lucky folk will also have the chance to see Milly enthral some rooms in person and she begins a mini-tour with label mates, Heart Of A Dog. Tour details are below, but for now sit back and enjoy this divine performance of “Book Or A Film” by Milly Hirst.

“Book Or A Film” features on Milly’s EP, Equator, which was recorded live and can be bought here. You can also buy the Milly Hirst EP, (review here) which was released by Bare Feet Records and is available on her Bandcamp page.
