nvdes – “The Other Side” (video)

14 Apr

Back in June last year, when nvdes debuted with “Before The Weekend Comes”, it was essentially a fun side project for producer Josh Ocean. Back then, we weren’t even allowed to tell you who the man behind the melon was, just that his modjo referencing debut was stunning and a promise of greater things to come.

Then greater things did come and we included the still secret Josh in our list of artists to listen out for in 2016. Still the greatness came and more and more people wanted a slice of the deliciously juicy and summery sounds he was coming out with. Now, like the clientele of Cheers, everyone knows his name and is totally in love with his music. Love from the UK is entirely understandable as nvdes is a delightful antithesis to the mostly dreary and dull weather we’ve been having, and his latest tune, “The Other Side”, is another prime example.

The second A of his new double A-side single (alongside the infectious but oh-so not safe for radio “Don’t Fvck Your Neighbor”) “The Other Side” is a bright, hyperactive dose of summer party music. With a “Sledgehammer” referencing video of neon, stop motion and more emojis than are found on a teenage Belieber’s twitter feed, it’s a sugar rush of hyperactivity and playful weirdness. About a relationship with a woman who liked to dress Josh up in her clothes, it could almost be an ADD companion to the James classic, “Laid” (“dress me up in women’s clothes / play around with gender roles”). Regardless, it is funky, fresh, addictive and so much fun.

Summer is still a bit away, but nvdes is doing its damndest to get it here quicker.

”Don’t Fvck Your Neighbor” and “The Other Side” are out now and can be bought digitally or on limited edition pink vinyl via Bandcamp.

2016 Preview: Artists to Listen out for Part Three

9 Dec

Listen Out For... (2)

We continue our look at some of our favourite new acts with the suitably named Part Three of our countdown of Artists to Listen Out For In 2016. These are the acts who we are particularly looking forward to hearing more from next year and who we always get excited to hear more from.

As a reminder, you can see who we have already featured in Part One (here) and Part Two (here) of the countdown.

#9 – Lyza Jane

Lyza Jane

We first properly encountered Lyza Jane when she released “If It Hurts” earlier this year.Taken from her gorgeous Milk Teeth EP, it is hushed and beautiful with electronic melodies gently trickling over subtly insistent beats. The whole EP is one of understated majesty, crafted exquisitely and deftly to ebb and nudge at you in the wee hours. Her music is a wonderful blend of stark electronica, trip-hop beats and warm soulful melodies, we love it.

After playing the brand new and very successful Dials Festival this year, amongst others, we expect to see Lyza make many more appearances on the more intimate and magical stages in 2016.

#8 – Madeira

Given that she has one of the voices we most love to hear in the world, the chances we’d be big fans of Kim Pflaum’s new solo project Madeira were always going to be high. So it is no surprise that with just a couple of collaborations and one solo track in the bag so far, we are already hooked.

“Let Me Down”, which is accompanied by a wonderful video directed by Kim herself, is a stunningly smooth and welcoming tune. It’s full of soft swaying branches of keys and rhythms as the breeze of her vocals gently brush through. Gorgeously calm and endearing, you want to close your eyes and gently sweep from side to side as it effortlessly wraps itself around you.

With a debut EP planned for the coming months, which we cannot wait for, 2016 is already looking like it could be a great one for Maderia.

#7 – nvdes

It may have been something to do with the fairly ropey weather we were having at the time, but when nvdes burst onto the scene back in June, it was like everyone wanted to bask in the warmth of his tunes.

Debut track “Before The Weekend Comes” was like a shot of sunshine administered aurally, and we couldn’t get enough. Dripping with laidback 90’s summer groove vibes, it was fantastically warm and uplifting. Fast forward a bit and follow up “Unforgettable” kicked things up a gear, injecting a little more energy into this heavenly world of sunshine and happiness he was creating.

Hopefully there are many more tunes to come in the new year but frankly, we’d be delighted if he just kept on soundtracking our summer.

nvdes – “Before The Weekend Comes”

17 Jun

We’re not sure what it has been like where you are, but here in the east of England, summer doesn’t yet feel like it’s got going. Sure we’ve had a few days of warm weather and bright sunshine but we’ve also had a fair few that were cold, wet and miserable. The weather is one reason it doesn’t yet feel like summer has kicked off properly, another is the kids are still in school and another, most importantly, is that we are yet to hear a proper uber summer tune.

Thankfully, the latter has been taken care of thanks to US based nvdes and his debut track, “Before The Weekend Comes”.

Sun-kissed and laidback, it feels like those ubiquitous summer anthems of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. We’re thinking Spiller and Modjo in particular. Gorgeous chilled out vibes mix with a pool party ready beat and a sweet falsetto that shines like the glare on your sunglasses.

It feels like summer, hell, it tastes like summer and listening to it makes us long for a pina colada by the pool with friends as the dj soundtracks our carefree holiday. It is a song that goes with good times and has the potential to be your tune of the coming months.

”Before The Weekend Comes” is available as a free download here.
