10 Records in 10 Days: Day Three

Welcome back to 10 Albums in 10 Days. A Facebook chain-turned 10 day blog series. The concept is simple. ”Post an album a day covering your 10 all time favourite albums. What really made an impact and is still on your rotation list, even if only now and then? Post the cover, no need to explain, and nominate a person each day to do the same”.

We’ve been nominated but rather than post without explanation, we thought it would be more fun to provide a little context. That is just the first of the rules we plan to break in this series. We are also not nominating anyone else (if you want to join in, you are more than welcome to do so) and we are also not adhering to any of the other implied rules either.

For the purpose of this series, we’ll be posting in the first person.

Day two saw me break an implied rule, day three sees me back on the straight and narrow and back into the mid-nineties for one of my teenage self’s absolute favourites and most listened to.


Sugar – Copper Blue

1992 was the year everything was going to change. British politics was coming to a watershed moment, a tipping point following a recession and constant talk of Maastricht and euro-rebels meant that even an politically ambivalent young teen such as I could tell something was afoot. As it was, the changes that came about were not so monumental, the political status-quo was surprisingly maintained and life continued much as it had in the preceding year or two. The changes that did occur were on a much smaller but no less seismic scale.

For this young guy in his formative and impressionable years, a change in friendships brought about an introduction to something new. While I had found Bowie and others like him in the past, my new found friends were focusing on the present and new found sounds from the pages of the likes of Melody Maker and Select magazine. It was through them and these oracles that I found Sugar and a whole new guitar sound.

Copper Blue brought punk to a whole new audience. To my young and uneducated mind punk was about mohawks, safety pins through your nose and screaming incoherent anger set to a discordant and anarchic din that was almost incomprehensible to anyone listening. This was different though; this had melodies and hooks galore, it was catchy and compulsive. It was punk-pop and I loved it.

Bob Mould’s guitars are thick and heady, it was unlike anything I’d heard at the time. It grinds and throbs like a heart made of gears. The drums aren’t so much played as beaten to within an inch of their life, cymbals crash like broken glass as those guitars rev up like a giant American muscle car.

In my older years Copper Blue has become a staple of the car, perfect for driving and singing along to with reckless enthusiasm (the singing, not the driving). The steering wheel is my drum kit and the throaty roar of the car’s engine (I really should get that checked) complements the relentless energy of the guitar riffs.

Each of its 10 tracks is a glorious achievement in the field of infectious alt-rock. It traverses a line so thin that it is barely visible to the naked eye, a line that sits between mainstream friendly pop song lovers and the grungey, flannel shirt wearing ‘cooler’ kids that were just starting to find their way out of the shadows.

While I didn’t wear the flannel and certainly wasn’t a cool kid, Copper Blue saw me start to find my way out of the shadows and into this new world. A world that would soon see me going to my first gig (see Day One) and broadening my musical horizons still further.

Pawws – “Give You Love”

Debates still rage about the relative merits and disadvantages of digital or physical music. The quality of sound, the cost of production, the sense of ownership and experience, the disposable nature of music etc etc yadda yadda yadda. It’s not something we’ve bothered ourselves with really as we see the positive in all formats and buy both digital and physical releases. That said, when a new Pawws track popped up online last night, we did find ourselves cursing once aspect of digital music, it’s ability to confuse and obfuscate. Specifically, the fact that we thought we were going insane because we were certain we’d heard “Give You Love” before, but could find nothing online to support that belief.

Of course, the reason for the confusion was that the demo version of the song that was posted months ago to promote a Pawws gig had been taken down and all that was left was a nagging sense of recognition and a worry that we were going a bit doolally. Thankfully we were not going crazy, nor more than normal anyway, and with the mystery solved we were eventually able to sit back and enjoy the light and breezy pop joy that is “Give You Love”.

Mind you, we say light and breezy but the subject matter is quite heartbreaking. Within this gorgeously soft and uptempo disco-splashed pop is a desire and devotion that has slipped into near desperation. A love so overwhelming that she will be whatever he needs her to be, just so she can be with him. Friend, lover, anything. And if love isn’t on offer, if an intimate relationship isn’t available, she will wait, as long as it takes for her dream, hoping that one day it will become reality.

Such a love is a powerful and dangerous thing yet with Lucy’s sweet and dreamy vocals it almost sounds like a positive life choice. Remind us to get her to sing the next lot of bad news we have to give someone, it’ll make it all so much easier.

Pawws – “Sugar”

We were a little late to the Pawws party last year, but once we heard “Slow Love” we hightailed it straight over just in time for cake and champagne. We imagine the champagne will be flowing for Lucy Taylor once again as, having been tipped for great things this year she has just signed up to Best Fit Recordings for the release of her debut EP, Sugar.

The title track has just been unveiled online and is a digital waterfall of cascading synth pop, all majestic and beautiful. Like a Jean Michel Jarre lightshow, the keys twinkle and glow, creating magical patterns across the night sky as Lucy’s soft and sweet vocals gently bewitch and entice all who hear her. ”I need to taste a little sugar” she calls out to a lover she can’t let go, the one she desperately needs to stay, ”Just pretend there is nothing wrong” she begs. How could we resist?

While Lucy may well be singing to the one that got away, we are certain that her pop stardom will not prove so elusive.

Wednesday Evening Earworm

Welcome back to the second in an occasional series where we share the tracks that have been ingrained into our very being for the last few days. These are the tracks, old or new, that just won’t leave us alone. We love them, so we want to share them so you can love them too.

We’ve got four great songs for you this week, so settle down, enjoy and let us know which one gets stuck in your head.

Perfume Genius – “Hood”

First up is the lead off single from Mike Hadreas’s sophomore album, Put Your Back N 2 It, (out this week on Matador/Turnstile) is just beautiful. It’s so simple, so elegant and emotive and of course, so very catchy. More often than not this week, we’ve found ourselves singing “You would never call me baby” in the most random of places. We’ve got some pretty funny looks as a result, but it’s worth it, the song is amazing.

Sugar – “Hoover Dam”

We’re going to go back, way back now, all the way to 1992 for our favourite, but perhaps the least celebrated, Bob Mould incarnation, Sugar. This came into our head when we got all excited about the announcement that Mould will be playing Copper Blue, in its entirety, at a show in London later this year. We have to admit, we got more than a little excited when we heard about that!

The Airborne Toxic Event – “Sometime Around Midnight”

This is one of our favourite break up songs of all time. We love the way the track grows, with sound and energy building to match the raw, tumultuous emotion brought about by unexpectedly seeing an ex.

Sameblod – “Kick It Out”

We first heard of Sweden’s Sameblod, whilst perusing the brilliant poule d’or site a few weeks back. To say we were blown away would be an understatement. We just love the chilled out, precision sounds of this electronic indie act. Incredibly, Sameblod was only ‘born’ in 2011 and we expect a debut full length this year.
