The Ramona Flowers – “Tokyo”

13 Mar

The Ramona Flowers Tokyo

It seems that each time we write about The Ramona Flowers we talk about how great the preceding weeks and months have been for the band, and we’re not about to change tactic now.

It’s been a fairly fantastic start to the year thus far for The Ramona Flowers featuring support slots with Bombay Bicycle Club on their European tour and Foxes for a couple of her recent UK shows. Even more exciting though is the news that their oft mentioned debut album is nearly upon us and it even has a name, Dismantle and Rebuild.

There is not, however, a release date as yet but there is music to get our collective teeth into in the form of brand spanking new tune, “Tokyo”. Sitting between the gentle beauty of “Lust and Lies” and the up-tempo dance-along-a “Brighter”, it is a subtly rousing piece of electro-indie-pop that already seems quintessentially them.

Building gradually, it’s a marbled swirl of electronic light and dark, with guitars trickling into synths as it winds up and down before finally growing and expanding. Like a mystical force controlling its surroundings, particles of earth and rock shudder and rise into the air before whipping round the sky, dancing soaring with the tune. The ground shakes slightly as a digitised wobble leaves us unsteady as the synths open out and up into the atmosphere.

”Tokyo” will be released 21 April via Distiller Records and will include remixes by Alt-J and Eagles for Hands. The Ramona Flowers next headline show is at London’s Sebright Arms on 24 April.

Watch: The Ramona Flowers – “Brighter”

Ramona Flowers Brighter

We readily admit that we may not be the sharpest tool in the box (if we were sent for an IQ test we’d probably end up lost in the paint and decorating aisle) but we do like to think that we are able to get music videos and their symbolism. Mostly anyway. There’s always one or two though that tend to leave us a little baffled and the latest offering from The Ramona Flowers falls into that category.

Don’t get us wrong, the video for “Brighter” is really good, it looks lovely and we do get the ‘in it together’ message that the two-young-lovers-escaping-an-unknown-big-bad-scenario conveys. We just don’t really know what’s going on. At first we thought it was a Battle Royale last one standing kinda thing, but that’s not it, so what are they running from? Why are they in their underwear? Why is there a boat in a field and how did she know to look under that particular pile of leaves? These questions need answering and the next time we see the band, we’re gonna ask them.

We do know that the song still sounds great and remains a bold, anthemic piece of folktronic-pop music that continues to mark The Ramona Flowers as a band on the rise. Enjoy the song, enjoy the video, scratch your heads and see what you think. Any theories are warmly welcomed.

”Brighter” is out now on Distiller Records, featuring “Bass Will Find You” as the b-side, and is available on clear 7” vinyl. The Ramona Flowers are also on tour (dates are below the video), we’ve seen them live twice this year and recommend you go along if you have the chance.

Ramona Flowers Brighter

It’s been a cracking few months for Bristol’s The Ramona Flowers, having toured with Bastille at the beginning of the year, releasing the gorgeous ”Lust And Lies” and seeing the video nominated for an AIM award. They have followed that up with their own headline tour (the Norwich show was fantastic, go see them on one of their remaining dates – details below), and the release of their latest single, ”Brighter”. A track that was much bigger, bolder and well, brighter, than its predecessor. Now they have posted the b-side online as well, and it’s another step further into the world of BIG, brash electro poppery.

It’s fast and furious, but rather than Vin Diesel and The Rock crashing expensive motors here there and everywhere, “Bass Will Find You” is more like the artwork for the single itself. Neon coloured lights blazing, it’s a high energy electric charge pulsing through fairground bumper cars whizzing and zooming around. Bombastic and frenetic, it has that touch of urgency and exhilaration you find behind the wheel as some random kid comes bombing towards you shrieking with laughter before suddenly veering away as you crash head first into a wall of POP again.

”Brighter” is out now on Distiller Records, featuring “Bass Will Find You” as the b-side, and is available on clear 7” vinyl.

Ramona Flowers Brighter

You may recall a few months ago, March to be exact, that we got rather excited by The Ramona Flowers and their (then) latest track, ”Lust and Lies”. They were also rather excellent on the same bill as MS MR and Bastille and have continued to forge something of a reputation for themselves as well as attracting the remix talents of Ladytron and Hot Chip. Hell, we liked them so much that we even interviewed them for The 405. Now the boys from Bristol have returned with another new track, due out in September, and it’s another cracker.

Where “Lust and Lies” was quite chilled and ambient in sound, “Brighter” is, well, brighter really. If “Lust and Lies” was a sunset, then “Brighter” is the sunrise, bathing the ground in light and warmth. It’s a bold, anthemic piece of folktronic-pop music; a pop cascade with keys, electronics and banjolele style sounds pouring out and bouncing off the glitter ball Sun which sparkles and reaches out across all it can see and beyond. Hell, it would even reach out to the dark shadowy place beyond Pride Rock where the hyenas live.

Big and infectious, “Brighter” suggests a bright future for the guys named after a Scott Pilgrim character and one that should enhance their reputation even further. Evidently they will soon be announcing a headline tour of their own and while we don’t have details yet, we do know that residents of our own Fine City of Norwich will get to see them at the Arts Centre on 16 September. We’ll see you there.

”Brighter” will be released on Distiller Records on 9 September and the EP will include remixes from Everything Everything and Mt. Wolf.

In Pictures: The Ramona Flowers Live – Norwich Waterfront 08/03/13

14 Mar

Yesterday we shared some fantastic pictures from the astounding MS MR gig at the Norwich Waterfront last week.

Also on the bill that night was The Ramona Flowers who, you may recall, we love immensely and who also put on a storming show. Tighter than Ebenezer Scrooge the day before pay day, they wowed the crowd with their big, glitchy and occasionally ambient pop sounds and hook filled choruses. If you weren’t there, then you missed an absolute treat but have no fear, for there is a solution at hand. Quickly fire up their Soundcloud page and take a look at these cracking shots from the fantastic rock photographer, Andi Sapey. Now you can pretend you were there all along.
