2014 Preview: Listen Out For #7 – Pawws

3 Dec

A couple of months back, a friend of ours said of Pawws incredibly infectious “Slow Love”, “I can’t decide if it is a guilty pleasure or not”. Our response was simple, “there’s nothing guilty about it [name redacted to protect the mostly innocent], it’s just pure pleasure”.

And that is what the music of Lucy Taylor brings, pleasure. Even when it is the slower, more introspective and contemplative sounds of “Time To Say Goodbye” you are left buoyed by the synths and the confidence within. On “Outside”, despite its melancholic tone and the subject of a failing/filed relationship, the coolness of the delicate pop feels refreshed and optimistic, ready to stand tall and step out into a world of hope and positivity. Surrounded by synths, electronic beats and flourishes, her lyrics are decidedly human and relatable. They stir your heart as well as your feet.

Our love for the music of Pawws was immediate and full on, an infatuation. Her music is instantly accessible and enjoyable with influences from the likes of Robyn, Annie and Madonna and vocals that are beautifully sweet and heartfelt. She can do big vibrant rainbows of sound, all danceable and bright and she can do genteel and calm as well. With any luck, and the support of the cracking ASL Records, she’ll be doing much more of it over the next 12 months and beyond.

”Slow Love” is, alongside “Time To Say Goodbye”, out now on limited to 300 copies 7” vinyl and can be ordered here.

Listen: Pawws – “Slow Love”

19 Jun

Given that “Slow Love” first appeared online a couple of months back now, it is fair to say we are a little late to the party. We like to think of it as being fashionably late mind you, long after all the people you invite just to fill it out have turned up but still before the booze has run out, Whigfield is on repeat on the stereo (even if the party is on a Thursday) and all your fish have mysteriously vanished from their tank.

Yep, we turned up at exactly the right moment for this stupendous piece of pop music from Pawws, as the video will be unveiled at any moment and the single is now up for pre-order (more on that later). There was nothing slow about our love for it at all, it was immediate and rather overwhelming actually. We were infatuated (still are) and it has been played a rather ridiculous amount of times and at volumes that tend to result in the police turning up at your house asking if you ‘wouldn’t mind turning it down please’ and ‘why is there a guy running around outside with a plastic bag filled with water singing, I’m going to eat you little fishy?’.

If skittles let you “taste the rainbow” then “Slow Love” makes you “see, hear, feel, and surf the rainbow”. With influences from the likes of Robyn, Annie and Kylie it’s a spin around during the chorus piece of electro-pop fantasticness. Lucy Taylor’s beautifully sweet and heartfelt vocals blend perfectly with its full on grooveability. Alongside Chvrches, Pawws is showing that there is still a lot of life in the pop-dog yet.

”Slow Love” is released alongside “Time To Say Goodbye” on limited to 300 copies 7” vinyl single on 15 July via. ASL Records and can be pre-ordered here.
